Glass Packaging Glossary — Jar & Cap Terms Explained

New to glass packaging? This glossary explains the most common terms used when buying glass jars, bottles and caps — so you can order with confidence.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| MOQ | Minimum Order Quantity — the smallest number of pieces you can order for a product, usually carton-based. |
| Food-graded glass | Glass certified safe for food contact; inert and non-reactive, it does not leach chemicals or absorb odours. |
| Lug cap | A metal twist-off cap with internal ‘lugs’ that grip the jar thread to create an air-tight seal. |
| Induction seal | A food-graded aluminium foil liner heat-sealed to the jar mouth for tamper evidence and freshness. |
| Air-tight | A seal that prevents air and moisture from entering, preserving aroma, flavour and shelf life. |
| Neck / finish | The top opening of a jar or bottle where the cap fits; measured in millimetres (e.g., 38mm, 82mm). |
| Capacity (ml) | The volume a container holds. Note honey is denser than water, so a 400ml jar holds ~500g of honey. |
| Carton packing | Standard bulk packing where jars are boxed by the carton for safe transport. |
